Saving a Washed-Out Driveway

Every storm turned this long gravel driveway into a disaster zone. Here is how we rebuilt it so the water sheds instead of cuts.

We have seen our fair share of erosion problems, but one recent driveway really stood out. Every time it rained, this long gravel driveway turned into a disaster zone, water cutting deep channels straight down the surface and washing material into the ditch.

The problem

The driveway ran about a quarter mile back to the house, with a long downhill section halfway through. Years of runoff had carved a deep rut down the middle, and the original base material had migrated to the bottom of the hill. The owner had already tried to fix it twice with surface gravel, and both times the next storm undid the repair.

The real issue was not the surface, it was the grade and the drainage. Water had nowhere to go, so it ran straight down the path of least resistance and took the driveway with it.

What we did

We started by stripping the loose material out of the channel and re-shaping the subgrade. From there we rebuilt the base with proper road material, brought the hill back up to grade, and crowned the surface so water sheds to the shoulders instead of running down the center.

On the downhill section we cut shallow swales on both sides to give the runoff a place to go before it could re-form a channel. New road base over the top, compacted in lifts, and a finish layer of ¾″ minus to lock everything together.

How it held up

Two heavy storms have rolled through since we wrapped. The owner sent us photos after both, the surface is dry, the shoulders moved water exactly where we wanted it, and the channel is gone. That is the work.
