Retaining walls that hold, because the drainage is right.

Boulder and block walls, hillside terracing, and slope repair across the Greater Colorado Springs area. We do the excavation and haul the rock ourselves, so the wall, the backfill, and the finish grade come from one crew.

Why us for a wall

A retaining wall is an earthwork job wearing a landscape face.

Most of what makes a wall last is buried. The excavation behind it, the compacted base under it, the drain rock and outlets that give water somewhere to go. Get those wrong and no amount of good-looking stone on the front saves it.

That is the part we have always done. Mountainside ER is an excavation and quarry-direct materials company, so the digging, the structural fill, the drain rock, and the finish grade are all in-house. Nobody is waiting on a supplier delivery or a second crew to show up.

Along the Front Range that matters more than it does in easier ground. Clay that swells with moisture, rock close to the surface, freeze-thaw all winter, and storms that arrive all at once. We size walls and their drainage for that, not for a catalog.

What we build

Walls, terraces, and the earthwork around them.

01

Boulder & Rock Walls

Heavy rock set to hold a grade, the same build as the hillside terrace we put in behind a new home in 2024. Reads as landscape, works as structure.

02

Large Block Walls

Big textured concrete blocks set by machine to hold a serious cut. Straight runs, curves, and stepped tops that follow the slope.

03

Hillside Terracing

Two or more shorter walls stepped up a slope instead of one tall one. Usually the cheaper and better-looking answer on a steep lot.

04

Slope Stabilization

Walls built to stop a hill that is actively moving, tied into swales and riprap so runoff stops pulling the toe out.

05

Wall Drainage

Drain rock, filter fabric and outlets behind every wall. Water is what takes walls down, so this is not the part to skip.

06

Steps & Access

Steps set into the terrace so the new grade is usable, not just held. Built into the wall, not bolted on after.

07

Wall Repair & Replacement

Leaning, bulging, or failed walls, including old timber walls that have rotted out. We dig it out, fix the drainage, and rebuild it.

08

Grading & Backfill

The excavation, the structural fill, and the finish grade above and below the wall. One crew handles the whole shelf.

Large block walls

Big concrete block, built for the tall cuts.

When a lot needs a deep cut into the hillside, these are the walls we build: heavy stamped-face concrete blocks, stacked and set by machine. If a wall will stand over 4 feet, it needs a design stamped and approved by an engineer in most cases, and we build to that drawing. Behind every wall goes a real drainage system, corrugated drain pipe bedded in crushed rock, so water never builds up and weakens the wall.

A six-foot drop-off, six feet behind the patio.

A new home was built right on the lip of a hill. Great views, and an unprotected drop-off behind the back patio that washed material into the yard every storm. We anchored the slope with a heavy rock terrace and a short retaining wall, brought in fill and crushed gravel to level a safe shelf at patio elevation, and set steps into the terrace so the lower grade is actually usable. It was sized so a second terrace can drop in later without redoing the structural work.

What you get

Four reasons to call us instead of a hardscape crew.

1

We already own the rock

We are a quarry-direct materials company first. The boulders, drain rock, structural fill and crushed gravel a wall needs come off our own trucks, so you are not paying a hardscape crew to mark up a supplier’s delivery.

2

Earthwork and wall from one crew

A wall is mostly excavation. Almost everywhere else the digging, the wall, and the final grade are three vendors and three schedules. Here it is one crew and one number.

3

Built for freeze-thaw and Front Range runoff

Clay that swells, rock close to the surface, and storms that dump all at once. We size drainage and backfill for that, which is why the 2024 terrace is still holding.

4

Engineered when the height calls for it

Short walls we build to spec. Once a wall is tall enough to need a stamped design, we bring the engineer in and build to their drawing instead of guessing at it.

Questions we get

Retaining wall FAQ.

What does a retaining wall cost in the Colorado Springs area?
It comes down to height, length, what the wall is holding back, and how hard the site is to reach. Material choice matters too, since a boulder wall and a block wall of the same size can price differently. We walk the site before we quote so the number is real instead of a range, and the quote is free.
Do I need a permit or an engineer for my wall?
Short landscape walls usually do not. Once a wall is over 4 feet tall, it needs a design stamped and approved by an engineer in most cases, and the same goes for walls holding up a driveway, a structure, or a slope above a building. We tell you which side of that line your project falls on at the site visit, and we build to the engineer’s drawing when one is required.
Boulder wall or block wall, which should I pick?
Boulder walls suit natural and rural properties, handle irregular ground well, and tend to look at home against Front Range terrain. Block gives you crisp lines, tighter curves, and a consistent face, which often suits newer subdivisions better. Both hold fine when they are drained and backfilled properly, so it is usually a look-and-site question rather than a strength question.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Water, almost every time. A wall with no drain rock, no filter fabric, and nowhere for water to go builds up pressure behind it until it leans, bulges, or comes apart. Freeze-thaw accelerates it. When we rebuild a failed wall, fixing the drainage is the real repair.
Can you fix my existing wall instead of replacing it?
Sometimes. If the wall is structurally sound and the problem is drainage or a section that has shifted, a repair can make sense. If it is leaning through its whole length, or it is an old timber wall that has rotted, rebuilding is usually the better spend. We will tell you straight which one you are looking at.
Do you also handle the grading and the material?
Yes, and that is the main reason to call us for a wall. We excavate, supply and place the structural fill, build the wall, backfill and drain it, then finish the grade above and below. Topsoil, fill dirt, road base, drain rock and decorative rock all come quarry-direct on our own super tandem trucks.
