Hillside Terracing & Retaining Wall Build
A steep drop-off behind a new home, fixed with a rock terrace, retaining wall, fill, and integrated steps. Safer footing, stabilized slope, and no more erosion off the back edge.

A new home built right on the edge of a hill, panoramic views, and a steep drop-off six feet behind the back patio. The owner wanted to use the patio without worrying about a fall, and we needed to stop the slope from washing material into the yard every time it rained.
The problem
The concrete patio backed straight up to the lip of a steep slope. Two issues stacked on top of each other, safety on the edge, and active erosion every heavy storm pulling the toe of the hill out from under it. Left alone, the slope was going to keep moving, and the patio was going to keep getting closer to the edge of it.
What we did
We anchored the hillside with a heavy rock terrace and a short retaining wall sized to hold the grade against runoff and freeze-thaw. That gave us a stable shelf at the back of the patio. We brought in fill dirt and crushed gravel to level it and tie it cleanly into the existing patio elevation, then set integrated steps into the terrace so the owner can step down to the lower grade safely.
The build was sized so a second terrace can drop in later if the owner wants to extend the outdoor living space, without redoing the structural work we already put in.
How it held up
The drop-off is gone. The slope is locked in by the terrace, the patio has a real edge to stand on instead of open air, and the storm runoff that used to scour the back of the lot now hits the rock and stops. Same view, no more erosion, no more anxiety about the edge.
